The FISU World University Games, also known as the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event for university athletes. The 2021 edition was held in Chengdu, China in 2023. The Portuguese delegation embrance around 80 people, including athletes, officials and the medical team.
About the Project.
One of the most complex projects I've been involved in. Several areas of design was needed to make it happen, from conceptualizing of the so-called "Portuguese Mission" to developing uniforms and covering all the days of the competition.
The concept of the mission was to use elements that unite China, the host country, and Portugal. From this, through research we discovered a possible millenary link between Portuguese tiles and Chinese ceramics, both sharing the same colors and have graphic elements in common.
Based on this, we created a tile pattern that would symbolize this journey to the other side of the world, inspired by a compass rose. One key element to the visual identity was the illustration made by a friend and amazing artist Mónica Milheiro. That combines all the sports Portugal competed in and some of Chengdu sightseeing.
Clothing Design.
For the event many different uniforms were made, including: Casual clothing for officials; sweatsuits; training and competition kits (one for each individual sports).
The training and competition kits follow the image of the mission, using the tile as a guideline for the different graphic materials, with the partial tile at the bottom and details on the sleeves.

Here are some of my favorite pictures taken during the competition. The event was a great opportunity to expand my catalog and pay special attention to the athlete rather than the event itself.
