The final round of the national university championships is the biggest multi-sport event in Portugal. Around 1,500 participants, 70 teams, 138 games and 164 hours of competition spread over +10 venues. Over the course of almost two weeks, student-athletes from the most diverse education institutions in the country compete.
About the Project.
This is the kind of event that we spend the whole season thinking about and idealizing. About six months beforehand is when the practical part begins, when the organizing committee presents a candidate logo and from then on we work more deeply on it and on the entire visual identity.
The logo must contain the letters C, N and U (national university championship) and contain some reference to the host city. Often it ends up being very subliminal, as in 2021. The colors and patterns also reflect the same characteristics.
In previous years there was no standard between the logo and typography, something we take great care of when this format came about in 2021, when I joined FADU, and we kept it for the following years.
The first step is the draw event. In addition to decorating the space, my job is also to transmit the draw from the clubs to the screens and broadcast it. Based on the system I developed just for this.
Event Design.
The decoration follows the same style, as is traditional in this type of event, and in other FADU competitions. The biggest difference is the main venue, where the finals take place. Each year we try to make the decorations different and maintain the visual identity of the event.
Because of the size of the event, the decoration goes beyond banners and flags. Everything must be consistent with the image, be it credentials, volunteer t-shirts, water bottles, etc.

Photography.
Here are my favorite photos from recent editions. Most of them are from the 2023 edition, because it was a big leap forward in terms of equipment and human resources.
